Not only does the big game significantly impact the overall economy, but the Super Bowl has long-lasting effects on the economy of the hosting location and its future growth. Here are some interesting financial stats about the Super Bowl. We tossed in a few fun facts on the game for good measure!

A slow start. The National Football League was founded in 1920, but the first Super Bowl wasn’t played until January 15, 1967. It was named the “AFL-NFL World Championship Game” The name was changed to the “Super Bowl” later after a suggestion by Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt.[i]

Cheap tickets and open seats. The first Super Bowl game cost game-goers an average of $12 per ticket, and it was the only game in history that wasn’t a sellout. Today, the starting price for a ticket is around $4,000, and every game has been a sellout since. An astounding 99.18 million viewers watched the 2022 Super Bowl.

The spread. The estimated amount consumers spent toward the Super Bowl in 2022 was a whopping 14.6 billion, with the individual consumer spending an average of $76 on party necessities such as food, technology, furniture, apparel, and décor. Part of the 2022 14.6 billion expenditure included placing bets on the big show at $136 million worth of bets placed in Nevada casinos.

Show us the money. Cities are awarded the Super Bowl many years in advance, with Miami being the top-played location. It’s estimated that a hosting city sees between $30 - $130 million in city GDP from hosting the game, with economic impact touted by the NFL as around $500 million.

Holy guacamole! Super Bowl Sunday is the second-highest eating day for Americans, right behind Thanksgiving. It’s estimated that about eight million pounds of guacamole are consumed on Super Bowl Sunday.
