ChatGPT and Financial Fraud: Staying Alert in the Digital Age

ChatGPT and Financial Fraud: Staying Alert in the Digital Age

June 17, 2024

We've recently read about a few education workshops centered on the increased technology and use of AI (artificial intelligence), specifically ChatGPT, taking place that produced some important insights that we'd like to pass along.

Quick overview: ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is designed to generate human-like text based on user prompts. This makes it super handy for all sorts of things, from writing emails to automating customer support to drafting processes and outlines. It's completely changing the business landscape and will continue to do so.

But, like with any powerful tool, it's a double-edged sword. In the past, one of the giveaways of fraudulent communication was grammatical or language errors. Unfortunately, scammers are using ChatGPT because it's so good at mimicking human language; they're using it to create phishing emails, fake websites, and even messages that look legit; what is the top area they're targeting? You're money. These scams can be convincing because they're crafted to sound just like a natural person or company you might trust.

It's creating a need to be even more vigilant. Here are a few tips:

Check Before You Click: If you get an email or message that looks even a bit off, take a moment to double-check. Look for signs like weird sender addresses, questionable written structure, or requests for personal info that seem too urgent or unexpected. Avoid downloading or clicking on links unless you are sure they are safe.

Use Strong Security: Make sure your accounts have multi-factor authentication (MFA) and strong, unique passwords. Be extra vigilant with your social media; this is currently the main target for ChatGPT targets.

Stay Aware: Stay up to date on financial scams and fraud tactics. Knowing how AI tools like ChatGPT can be used against you can help you spot red flags.

Stick to the Pros: When dealing with financial stuff, always go through trusted banks or financial institutions. Don't share sensitive info on dodgy websites or through unofficial channels. ALWAYS reach out directly to the bank or business entity when in doubt.

By following these tips, you can stay a step ahead of scammers. Remember, while tools like ChatGPT are unique and can make our lives easier, staying alert and protecting yourself from those who might misuse them is crucial. Stay safe out there!
