Summer has a funny way of making us think we'll suddenly become adventurous. We picture ourselves hiking mountains at sunrise, mastering paddleboarding, or finally reading that stack of books that's been collecting dust since January. Then reality hits. It's hot. The couch is comfortable. And then, somehow it's Labor Day. This year, skip the pressure to have the "perfect" summer. Instead, make it memorable with a few delightfully random adventures. Here are some ideas to add to your own “Unhinged Summer Bucket List.” Find the Weirdest Ice Cream Flavor You Can. Forget vanilla or chocolate. Hunt down something unexpected like sweet corn, dill pickle, garlic, lavender honey, goat cheese cherry, or black sesame. You don't have to like it, but you’ll probably be surprised! Be a Tourist in Your Own Town. Is there a museum, park, historic site, or quirky roadside attraction you've driven past a hundred times but never stopped to explore? Chances are you'll find something worth talking about or at least check that it’s a one-and-done experience. Watch Sunrise and Sunset on the Same Day. It sounds simple, but most of us rarely do either. Pick one day, bring coffee for the morning and dessert for the evening, and enjoy both bookends of summer. This is particularly unique because summer brings the longest days of the year, so there’s plenty of daylight to fit in activities (including a nap), making it an epic day of memories if you pack it full. Say Yes to a Random Festival. The weirder the better! Blueberry Festival? Rubber Duck Race? Garlic Festival? Renaissance Fair? Summer is full of wonderfully odd local events. Go for the people-watching if nothing else, but it can be even more fun to really immerse yourself in the experience. Eat Dinner Somewhere Completely Unexpected. Pack a picnic or grab some takeout and head to a scenic overlook, a quiet beach, a botanical garden, or even your own backyard lit with string lights. Sometimes changing the setting makes an ordinary meal feel like a vacation. Create a Summertime Capsule. Write down your favorite songs, funniest memories, photos, ticket stubs, and little moments from this summer. Seal it away and promise to open it in five years. You'll be amazed by what you've forgotten. Summer Doesn't Have to Be Expensive to Be Memorable The moments we remember most are rarely the ones we planned perfectly. They're the spontaneous detours, the unexpected laughs, and the stories that start with, "Why not?" Whatever your summer looks like, here's hoping you make time for something unexpected, something fun, and maybe even something just a little unhinged. Enjoy every sunny moment while it lasts! |
