Let’s Taco ‘Bout Diversification

Let’s Taco ‘Bout Diversification

May 05, 2025

In the spirit of Cinco de Mayo, let's spice things up and taco 'bout something that's just as deliciously important in your financial journey as guac is to a taco: diversification.

Now, imagine building the perfect taco. Would you load it up with only lettuce? Of course not. A taco needs mix-seasoned meat (or a plant-based option!), cheese, salsa, sour cream, and maybe some guac (okay, definitely guac), all wrapped up in a shell or tortilla. Every ingredient adds flavor, texture, balance, and, more importantly…nutrition.

Diversification in investing works the same way. You don't want all your money in just one type of investment—like having a taco with one ingredient. If you go that route, it's bland and doesn't give the nutrition a well-balanced meal does. But spread your investments across different assets—stocks, bonds, real estate, and even international markets—and you reduce the risk of your whole portfolio going up in flames if one area takes a hit.

Just like no two tacos are the same, no two investment portfolios are the same. Some are spicy and high-growth with more risk, and others are mild and steady (bonds or dividend stocks). When you blend them, you get a portfolio that's more resilient and rounded.

So when you think about your portfolio and your investments, think: Have we built a well-rounded taco? Because in the market, just like at your favorite taco truck, variety really is the spice of life—and the key to financial health.

And as food for thought, here's a list of great Cinco de Mayo recipes that'll help you build a full-flavored and delicious meal!
