If you're anything like us, you'll do everything you can to keep your animals safe during the warm months of the summer. While we’re all ready to soak up the sun, our furry companions need a little extra TLC during the hot months. Here are some must-have items to keep your pets safe, happy, and cool all summer long. Pet-Safe Sunscreen—Pets can get sunburned, too, especially those with light-colored fur, pink noses, or hairless breeds. Regular sunscreen can be toxic to animals, so make sure to use a pet-safe sunscreen (look for pet-specific brands). Apply it to sensitive areas like the ears, nose, and belly before outdoor fun. Cooling Vests & Mats—Pets can overheat quickly in high temperatures. Cooling vests and mats use evaporative technology or gel to keep your pet’s body temperature in check. Soak the vest or place the mat in the shade and let your pet chill in style. You can also find swaggy hats for pups that can provide some sunshade and some cooling water. Paw Protection Wax or Booties—Hot pavement can burn your pet’s paws. Use paw wax or summer booties to protect those toe beans on walks. Bonus: They also protect against sand and rocky trails, and during harsh winter months, so these can be used year-round Travel-Sized First Aid Kits for Pets—Be prepared with a pet first aid kit that includes antiseptic wipes, bandages, peroxide (for poisoning situations), rubbing alcohol, tweezers, and emergency contact info for your vet. If you’re traveling, look up the nearest emergency vet for each place you stay so you know where to go if something happens that requires immediate attention. Rubbing alcohol can be used on pets' paws to help lower temperatures in case of overheating. Life Jackets—Even strong-swimming dogs can tire quickly, get caught in currents, or struggle in rough water. A life jacket adds visibility and buoyancy, helping keep your pup safe during any water adventure. It also helps to keep your pup's head above water and avoid too much water intake or inhaling into the lungs, which can lead to dry drowning later.
